Ensuring Loading Accuracy in Bulk Petroleum Transport
Preventing errors is a big part of ensuring reliable and dependable transport for customers. Perhaps nowhere is that more obvious than with hazardous goods like petroleum, where a small oversight could create big problems for suppliers, haulers, or customers. To ensure loading accuracy, transport companies must continually monitor their operations and troubleshoot creatively to make certain they’re doing everything they can to prevent errors.
The First Step: Understanding Issues
With ARG, our bulk petroleum transport division, service rates are a big priority. When we recently analyzed our team’s performance, we noticed one area with room for improvement related to loading procedures. When drivers pick up fuel from a supplier, their truck’s satellite sends a message providing them with the key details they need to know about that load, including the fuel type, the volume to be loaded, the supplier, etc. We noticed that in many cases drivers were trying to memorize these crucial details or were writing them down on scrap bits of paper (which were often misplaced) before they exited the truck to load the fuel.
Better Analysis & Consultation = Effective Solutions
Through consultation with drivers and dispatchers, we designed a “Cab to Rack” program. With this new system, the driver fills out a small card with the key details needed for each pickup. That way, they can record the information they need while in their truck, and they have everything they need to know right at their fingertips when they arrive at the rack. This simple new system has helped to eliminate errors and save drivers’ time, making their pickups more efficient and reliable.
For small companies, maintaining good oversight is often a much simpler task than for complex organizations. That’s why these challenges become more significant – and more pressing – as a company grows. To stay ahead, it’s important to continually monitor performance in key areas, and come up with creative and effective solutions where there is room for improvement. Thoughtful process analysis and oversight can help a company limit mistakes and ensure best practices are met – especially where it really matters.
